It is a timeless concept. However, in this essay, while discussing Poes work, his reputation as the proto modernist figure will be analyzed as he had foresaw the materialization of this movement in his early days. Discussion Edgar Allen Poe was the first American short story writer who has made the philosophical and psychological theories remarkably significant in the European countries. He was entirely dissatisfied with the conventional literary standards and norms and tried to establish his own theories in his literary works. Poe has written his works way before the appearance of the Modernist movement during the middle of the nineteenth century, but it had showed that these techniques are used in his literary works that provided an encouragement and a model for the Modernist writers. Most of his literary works were concerned profoundly about the state of mind of the protagonist than the outside world they were living in. In his The Tell-Tale Heart (1843), it is showcased that the first person narrator is telling about the Evil Eye of the old man that makes the narrator dreadfully nervous. He also said that the thought of murdering the old man haunted him every day and night. In the short story, The Black Cat, Poe has also depicted the story as a first person narrative. The narrator tell the readers than in his early days he had a sheer love for the pets and his wife and he had number of pets including a beautiful black cat named Pluto. Even though both were fond of each other, after coming home intoxicated one night, the narrator thought that the cat is avoiding him (Poe, Edgar Allan, pg: 109). This story is one of the darkest tales of Poe that evokes a sense of superstition and the abnormal state of mind of the narrator. Martin And Malcolm: Two Sides Of The Same Coin Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X were two of the most important and influential figures of the Civil Rights Movement during the sixties. Both Martin and Malcolm represented the two different sides of the same coin in the black movement to fight for freedom. Though the their struggle for black freedom was shared, their approach tactics were not. Both were highly intelligent, accomplished men in their own right, both were ministers of different faiths yet they both believed in the same God. Martin and Malcolm were both well matched but differently styled orators. Martins speeches were insistent to white America and at the same time soothing to his black followers, his voice soulful and inspiring. Martin spoke as if he plucked the words right out of the mouth of God. Malcolm on the other hand was fiery, outspoken, indignant, with an accusing tone pointed toward white America, and he appealed to the gut and pride of black America. Malcolm spoke fearlessly and impatiently and his words rammed straight into the hearts of his listeners. Martin represented the side of the coin that was turn the other cheek and Malcolm represented the other side which was an eye for an eye. Martin, a Southern Baptist minister preached and followed the effective ideology of Mohandas Gandhi in securing Civil Rights through peaceful, non-violent protest and advocated integration and peaceful co-existence between blacks and whites in America. Malcolm X, a former juvenile delinquent who joined the Nation of Islam and eventually became a minister for the Nation of Islam embodied militancy in the struggle for equal rights. Malcolm called for the use of any means necessary, to obtain freedom and he also believed in a separate nation for blacks--not integration. Memory is essential to adaptive behavior because it allows past experience to guide choices. In the experiment conducted by Narine-et-al., participants are asked to imagine that they’re a part of a small tribe living in grassland of a foreign land. They’re asked to gather or hunt food items in order to help their and their tribes’ survival. Next a list of words are presented, and participants are asked to rate the relevance of each word to the imagined scenario. In a later surprise memory test, participants typically remember the words rated for relevance to this fitness-relevant scenario better than they remember words that are not fitness relevant (to the scenario). Human memory is evolved because it enhanced survival and fitness in environments that were present during the extended period of human evolution. Anderson Schooler (1991, 2000) suggested that certain mnemonic characteristics, such as the general form of the retention function, mimic the way events tend to occur and recur in the environment. It has been suggested that sex differences in spatial abilities, including a memory for object locations, may have an evolutionary basis. Silverman Eals (1992) suggested that the division of labor typically found in hunter-gatherer societies-men hunt and women gather-may have led to unique foraging-related cognitive specializations of the sexes. Men generally outperform women on tasks thought to be related to hunting skills (e.g. navigation and orientation), whereas women often show an advantage on tasks requiring memory for objects stored in fixed locales. The experiment conducted is based on the study done by Narine-et-al. (2009), here the participants are randomly divided into three groups; hunter, gatherer, and scavenger. Participants in the experiments were asked to rate the relevance of words to scenarios that were specifically designed to mimic prototypical hunting and gathering activities. Following the rating task, participants received a surprise recall test on the rated words. Participants always rated the relevance of the target words to hunting or to gathering food, but under conditions that were either fitness relevant or not. The purpose of this study was to learn whether or not memory systems have evolved to better retain information related to fitness-survival value.
